MOUNTAIN VIEW – Host, Sarah Rutan: If you own or manage a commercial building, in order to avoid a fine, you’ll need to know some critical aspects of fire code compliance. To learn more, we’re in Mountain View with Cherie Anderson, speaking on behalf of Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Harris Ginyard of STATCOMM Inc.

Cherie Anderson: So we have three tips for you today that will hopefully save you a lot of money.

First and foremost when you get your building painted, please be sure that you have the painters covering the sprinkler heads and the escutcheons completely. Fire code insists that if their is paint on a sprinkler head, that head has to be replaced and you know if you have a painter come in and that whole ceiling is painted, you could end up with a very costly repair. So, cover the escutcheons and cover the fire sprinkler heads.

Number two, check your vendors contract. A c10 license gives you the ability to perform a fire alarm testing. A c16 license gives you the ability to do the fire sprinkler testing. If your vendor does not carry both of those, they are only doing one of those tests and if you have both of those systems, they are both required to be tested. So, check it out. You should be able to find that out on their website but don’t leave yourself unprotected on the other side.

Third, and one of the most important ones, again a very costly one. If you have fire doors in the hallway of your building and you decide you are going to get new flooring or new carpeting, pat close attention to the height of that carpet or that flooring. Fire doors are required to shut in a very specific amount of time and so many times we have seen beautiful carpet that prevents those doors from shutting and you have to end up replacing that. So make sure the carpet doesn’t prevent the door from shutting.
