HAYWARD − Host, Sarah Rutan: While an alarm system will add to your home’s security, a more critical measure is fortifying your exterior doors with quality hardware. Today we’re in Hayward with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Blaine Lucas to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Blaine Lucas: Whatever your budget, there are security solutions out there to help improve your situation. Here at Foothill Locksmith, we are big fans of burglary alarms. But alarms let you know after the criminal has gained entry. We want to stop that alarm from going off by adding UL 437 high security locks like Medeco and reinforcing your door and door frame. With these upgrades, you can gain protection and lessen the stress of tripping your alarm system.

We recommend using the highest security deadbolt. Shown here a minimum high security deadbolt that has a solid steel one inch deadbolt extends into the door frame. There’s a substantial amount still inside the lock for added protection. It is UL listed for pick and drill resistance and it comes standard with long three inch screws that grab the two by fours inside the door frame. An economical upgrade would be to add an over sized strike plate to your present deadbolt for added kick in protection.

Most standard deadbolts only come with a half inch screw offering minimum protection against kick in. With a added oversize strike plate with offset three inch screws grabbing your two by fours in the wall gives you maximum protection against someone trying to kick open your door. Just adding longer screws to a standard strike plate will miss the two by fours in the wall and still only offer minimum protection. Make sure your oversized strike plate is using offset screws to grab the two by four inside the wall.
