SAN RAMON – Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re trying to lose weight, you’ll want to know about a crucial factor that can substantially affect your progress. Today we’re in San Ramon with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Dr. Michael Temkin of LeanMD to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Dr. Michael Temkin:  Today, I really wanted to talk about the importance of your basal metabolic rate in weight loss. So, your basal metabolic rate is essentially how many calories you burn per day — very important. It is the common denominator in weight loss. If you are consuming exactly what you’re burning, your weight will maintain. Obviously, if you’re eating or consuming more than your basal metabolic rate, you’ll gain weight, and, less, you’ll lose weight.

In order to see weight loss in the two- to four-pound per week rate, you typically have to stick about 500 to 600 calories below your basal metabolic rate. So, for instance, if you’re a 40-year-old female with a basal metabolic rate of 1,500, she should maintain a 1,000-calorie diet in order to see significant weight loss.
