Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Dr. Michael Temkin: Today, we’re here to talk a little bit about the science behind coolsculpting — a very interesting history with coolsculpting. Coolsculpting was discovered many years ago by some physicians who found that when children were sucking on popsicles, it actually sometimes created a dimpling of the cheeks. It was found that the cold temperature froze or caused lipolysis of the fat cells in the cheeks, which led to the dimpling.

Today, through modern technology, we’ve been able to harvest that cold temperature to actually treat fat cells in our own bodies. So, we target, specifically, with coolsculpting, areas that are difficult to manage, areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. We target those specific areas by bringing them into an applicator, freezing them, and when you freeze those areas, in about 30 to 35 minutes, the fat cells will die. And as they die, they will slowly get reabsorbed by the body.
