Using the Right Engine Oil

SUNNYVALE – To ensure long-term vehicle performance, it’s crucial to use the correct type of engine oil. With the increasing sophistication of modern engines, this is no longer a mere matter of differentiating between 10W-30 and 10W-40. For example, high-end makes like BMW use synthetic oils that are very different than the oils used in most other vehicles. That’s why it’s important to check your owner’s manual, find out what type of oil your vehicle requires and stick to it. Additionally, when purchasing oil, read the bottle’s label and make sure it meets manufacturer standards.

If you own a high-end vehicle that takes synthetic oil, you should also be aware of its oil change interval. According to the manufacturer, a newer BMW can go up to two years or 20,000 miles between oil changes. However, while this interval may be fine when the car is still new, as it gets older, oil changes should occur more frequently to ensure healthy performance. Furthermore, when a car goes two years without being seen by a mechanic, there’s a risk of other maintenance needs being overlooked.

To avoid potential problems, it’s a good idea to bring your BMW (or comparable high-end make) in for an oil change once a year or every 8,000 miles. This will allow your auto technician to refresh your oil reservoir and make sure your tires, brakes, and other vehicle components are in good operating condition.
