Sergey Stotskiy: An Unlikely Conduit

  • Sergey Stotskiy is owner of Kapriz Hardwood Floors.

“I prefer to let the quality of my work speak for itself.”

SANTA CLARA – After losing his job as a software engineer, Sergey Stotskiy went out and bought a puppy. While not the most practical choice given the circumstances, it ended up being an unlikely conduit to a new livelihood. “My wife and I were software engineers, and when the tech bubble burst, we both lost our jobs,” he says. “I was kind of depressed, so I went to a pet store just to browse around and ended up buying a puppy. The next morning, I awoke to find it had ripped up the carpet throughout our condo. I got a couple of bids to see how much it would cost to replace the carpet with hardwood, but the prices were crazy so I decided to do it myself. It actually turned out nice—so nice that my neighbors asked me to do their floors next. That was the beginning of my hardwood flooring career.”

Today, as owner of Kapriz Hardwood Floors, Sergey expresses his appreciation for his subsequent livelihood. “I like working with hardwood flooring a lot more than engineering software. There’s certainly a lot more variety—every day, it’s a different jobsite and different customers. Basically, it’s a lot less boring!”

Originally from Ukraine, Sergey resides today in Half Moon Bay with his wife, Olga. Outside of work, he spends much of his time enjoying the area’s natural beauty. “Besides being close to the ocean, I like the fact that there are a lot of hiking trails nearby,” he says. “I also enjoy skiing and snowboarding at Tahoe and doing remodeling projects at my house.”

In regard to his professional career, Sergey says he prefers the hard-earned dollar to easy money. “Being successful takes a lot more than just throwing the floor down and getting out of there. That’s why I go the extra mile to give my clients great service and quality workmanship. I don’t play games or try to sell them unnecessary things—I prefer to let the quality of my work speak for itself.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Sergey says he’d hop on a plane. “I would definitely travel. In particular, I’d like to spend more time traveling around Europe. I’d also like to buy a vacation house in the middle of the country—somewhere that has some lakes and a lot of natural beauty.”
