Scott Raaka: Building Equity
“I really like the transactional part of the business, but I also enjoy meeting with clients and showing them houses.”

SONOMA – Scott Raaka has always maintained an interest in real estate, so when his financial career started to lose its luster, he opted to make it his full-time livelihood. “For most of my career, I worked as an equity trader in capital markets,” he explains. “However, I always had an interest in real estate and liked to follow the market. After 22 years, I felt the need for a change, so I began to consider my options. Besides having an interest in real estate, I figured it was something I’d be able to do with having to move away from my hometown. It wasn’t long before I acquired my license and became a Realtor.”

Today, as a real estate agent with W Real Estate, Scott says he enjoys his job’s dual aspects of process and people. “Real estate has a lot of similarities to my old career, as far as all the paperwork and negotiating, but it also has a lot more personal interaction. I enjoy both sides of it—I really like the transactional part of the business, but I also enjoy meeting with clients and showing them houses.”

A lifetime resident of Sonoma (where he lives with his wife, Emily, and their children, Lily and Carson), Scott expresses his appreciation for its small-town character. “Sonoma is a great community to live and work in. Having grown up here, I know a lot of the people and have a lot of connections, so it’s nice seeing friendly, familiar faces wherever I go.”

Outside of work, Scott likes to stay active, whether by going to the gym or hitting the Tahoe slopes. “I’m an avid skier, so I spend as much time in Tahoe as I can,” he affirms. “That’s actually another great thing about being in real estate—since I work on the weekends, I get to do most of my skiing on the weekdays when it’s less crowded.” Scott also enjoys going on trips with his family. “Whether it’s going up to the mountains, down to Southern California or to another country altogether, we have a lot of fun travelling as a family.”

In his life and career, Scott espouses the importance of doing your homework. “Whatever you’re doing, whether buying a house or investing in the stock market, my biggest recommendation is to get as much information as you possibly can,” he says. “The more knowledgeable you are, the better equipped you’ll be to make a good decision when it counts.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Scott says he’d hop on a plane. “I’d probably go on a trip somewhere I haven’t been yet. I’d like to see Italy, Spain, Southern France and the Mediterranean countries. Maybe I’d just spend a month in Europe and see them all.”
