CAPITOLA − When Ryan Colligan started working for his stepfather’s senior care business as a summer job between college semesters, he didn’t realize it would lead to a full-fledged career. “My stepfather founded Safe At Home Senior Care 10 years ago with the goal of providing better in-home care services for elderly individuals in our community,” he explains. “Within a short time, I fell in love with this type of work and developed a genuine interest in helping people. I decided I wanted to continue with the company with the eventual goal of getting involved in management. Over the next several years, my stepfather groomed and educated me to be in a position where I’m now managing the company.”

Today, as director of Safe At Home Senior Care, Ryan says his favorite part of his job is working alongside the company’s staff. “I love the team environment we’ve created here. I enjoy working hand-in-hand with our team members. We have the best staff, from our management team to the care providers who provide one-on-one care for our clients. We take a lot of pride in providing great services, and we love receiving positive feedback from our clients about how we’ve enabled mom or dad to stay in their own home and maintain their independence.”

Born and raised in Capitola, Ryan attended college at CSU, Chico (where he earned a degree in business) and lived in San Francisco for several years before returning to his hometown. “I love Capitola,” he says. “I am active in the community. I’m a board member of the Capitola/Soquel Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Santa Cruz Rotary Club, Toastmasters, and other local organizations.”

Outside of work, Ryan engages in a variety of pastimes, from hanging out with his family to outdoor activities like fishing. “I love spending time with my wife, Débora, and my family,” he says. “I also really enjoy fishing, particularly for freshwater bass, and my wife and I enjoy salsa dancing.”

In his life and career, Ryan espouses the importance of maintaining a positive frame of mind. “Having a positive mental attitude and strong work ethic have definitely helped me in both my past endeavors and my current career,” he affirms. “There are always areas where you can improve, but if you’re persistent and you believe in yourself, you can eventually excel at just about anything. I think that’s enabled me to be successful and continue moving forward in my life and career.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Ryan says he’d take a week off to relax. “I’d grab my boat, rent a house on the delta and fish with my brothers.”
