Oscar Soltero: An Unexpected Impression
“I try to be passionate about whatever I do and do it to the best of my ability.”

CONCORD – Oscar Soltero never intended to be a stone and tile professional, but when a friend took notice of his DIY handiwork, it became the catalyst for a new livelihood. “It was all by accident, really,” he says. “At the time, I was working as an automotive machinist. One day, a friend who was in the tile business came over and was impressed by the tilework in my bathroom. When I told him I’d done it myself, he said I had the potential to do it professionally. Next thing you know, I was in an apprenticeship program and things just progressed from there.”

Today, as owner of Stone & Tile Impressions, Inc., Oscar says his favorite part of his job is making a lasting impression on his clients. “I really enjoy meeting people and helping them achieve their goals for their tile projects. It’s very rewarding to come in and bring their dreams to fruition.”

A lifetime Bay Area resident, Oscar grew up in San Francisco and today lives in Concord with his wife, Kathy, where he appreciates the diverse local landscape. “I just love all the variety the Bay Area has to offer. The setting itself is incredibly diverse: drive an hour in any given direction and you can be in the city, at the beach or in the mountains.”

Outside of work, Oscar engages in a variety of active pastimes, often in the company of his wife and daughters. “Both of our daughters have grown up, but we still do a lot of things together as a family, like hiking and boating,” he says. “Personally, my main hobby is music: I play drums and Latin percussion in a couple of local bands. It’s something I’ve been doing since I was a teenager, and I still enjoy it.”

In regard to a personal philosophy, Oscar espouses the importance of giving your all. “I try to be passionate about whatever I do and do it to the best of my ability,” he explains. “At Stone & Tile Impressions, we put in our best effort from start to finish and take all the necessary steps to ensure quality results. The same thing goes for my music—I take the time to learn the material and do the best I can to perform it well. So, it doesn’t matter what area of your life you’re addressing; putting forth your best effort is the only way to go.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Oscar says he’d see the world. “I would definitely do some traveling. We’ve been to Mexico, Australia and a few other places, but there’s still plenty we have yet to see. We haven’t had a chance to explore Europe, so that would be first on our list.”

Ask me anything!
Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?

A: The past, just because life used to be simpler then. Everything moves so fast nowadays, so I like the idea of slowing down and simplifying a bit.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?

A: I like crunchy snacks like nuts and popcorn.

Q: What was your favorite toy as a child?

A: My toy firetruck.

Q: Are you a dog person or a cat person?

A: A dog person. We have a boxer named Layla; she’s a great dog.

Q: How do you like your eggs?

A: Over easy.
