Mike Young: An Enduring Interest
"I get a really special feeling from knowing I helped [my clients] with a major life transition.”

SOQUEL – Mike Young took an early interest in real estate, but it wasn’t until later in life that he took the chance to pursue it as a career. “I originally became interested in real estate from working on my dad’s rental properties,” he remembers. “Every time a tenant moved, he’d have me and my brother out there painting, patching, and fixing things up.” Upon reaching adulthood, Mike gravitated toward the tech industry, where he found a long-term position working for a software company. However, he never lost his interest in real estate, so when the tech bubble burst in the early 2000s, he saw it as an unexpected opportunity. “When the company I worked for was sold, I decided to pursue a career in real estate. After all, being 50 years old isn’t exactly an asset in the tech field, whereas in real estate, a little gray hair elicits trust because it shows you have a bit of life experience.”

Today, after 12 years as a real estate professional, Mike says his favorite part of his job is matching clients with the right properties. “It’s neat to see how focused and excited people get when I find a house they really like. And after the transaction is complete, I get a really special feeling from knowing I helped them with a major life transition.”

As a resident of Aptos, Mike expresses his appreciation for the area’s diverse natural beauty. “I love the fact that we have access to both beaches and forested areas, including several natural parks,” he says. “As someone who enjoys running, all the trails and beaches make it an ideal location.”

Outside of work, Mike engages in a variety of active pastimes that include golf, working out and attending meetings of his local Toastmasters club. However, he also enjoys activities pertaining to his sphere of professional expertise. “I organize a local real estate investor’s club and do a radio show every week on KSCO 1080 AM called ‘The Mike Young Real Estate Hour,’” he explains. “We bring on local industry experts, talk about various topics and answer questions for listeners who call in.”

In regard to his professional career, Mike says he’s learned to stay attuned to his clients’ goals, even as they change over time. “When clients start looking at different properties, their ideas about what they want often evolve. That’s why it’s important for me to ask the right questions, listen closely to them and lead them where they want to go, all while reminding them about their initial needs and goals.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Mike says he’d tee off at a tropical location. “I would probably buy a vacation home in Hawaii and split my time between here and there. The golfing is fantastic over there, so I’d love to spend more time playing and relaxing.”
