Jorge Vasquez: Automotive Passion
"[As] the owner, I really like being able to ‘steer the ship,’ so to speak..."

NOVATO – Jorge Vasquez got into automotive work purely out of necessity, but over time, that necessity developed into a full-fledged passion. “Like most 16-year-olds, when I reached driving age, I wanted to get my own car,” he remembers. “However, I realized that if something were to go wrong, I’d have to fix the car myself, which meant I’d need to learn about auto repair. I figured the best way to do this was to take auto shop class at school. I took my first semester of auto shop in my junior year and basically fell in love with it.”

After high school, Jorge went straight into the automotive field, but he soon learned that if he wanted to advance, he’d need a more formal education. “After about a year working as a helper at an auto shop, the owner said to me, ‘Jorge, if you want to move up in this industry, you’ll need to go to school.’ So, I enrolled in a five-year automotive program at Skyline College in San Bruno. After completing the program, I worked for another six or seven years before starting my own shop.”

Today, as owner of J.E.V. Automotive, Jorge likes having control over the direction of his business. “When I was an employee, I was limited in what I could do,” he explains. “If I wanted certain training or new equipment, I had to wait for the owner to authorize it. Now that I’m the owner, I really like being able to ‘steer the ship,’ so to speak, and guide the company in the way it needs to go.”

As a resident of Petaluma (where he lives with his wife, Evelyn, and their four children), Jorge expresses his appreciation for the North Bay Area’s scenic beauty. “Everything that’s around us is amazing. Within five minutes from where I work, I could be hiking up a mountain trail. It’s just a beautiful place to live.”

Outside of work, Jorge devotes the bulk of his time to family. “We have four kids, ages 14 all the way down to two months, so it’s all about family these days,” he says. “We do a lot together, from attending races at Sonoma Raceway to going hiking on local trails. We’re also a very musical family—we each play an instrument, so it’s a lot of fun when we all play together.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Jorge espouses the importance of integrity. “Integrity is at the core of everything we do,” he affirms. “I often go over our company’s code of ethics at employee meetings so I can remind everyone that integrity is number one. After all, our customers bring their cars here because they trust us, so we never want to take advantage of that.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Jorge says he’d hop on a plane headed to a foreign destination. “Due to all the diversity in the Bay Area, I’ve had the opportunity to meet people from all over the world, so I would love to travel and visit some of the places these people are from. I’ve always wanted to visit China and Japan, and I’d also like to see Europe. I guess I just want to see it all!”
