John Bergh: Skill Synergy
"[Solar] saves homeowners energy and money, and given the current energy crisis and our reliance on fossil fuels, it’s just the right thing to do.”

DAVIS − Having acquired a number of practical skills in his early life, John Bergh was surprised to find an industry where he could incorporate them all. “Growing up in the Clarksburg/Yolo County area, I used to help my dad with things like drilling water wells and servicing farm equipment,” he says. “In addition to gaining a familiarity with water pumping and electrical service, I got into roofing in high school, which widened my range of experience. Later, when solar energy started to become more mainstream, I found that my knowledge of roofing, electrical work and water pumping were all applicable to that industry.”

Today, as owner of Sun Metrics, John says he appreciates the many positive attributes that his job entails. “Installing solar is really gratifying work. It saves homeowners energy and money, and given the current energy crisis and our reliance on fossil fuels, it’s just the right thing to do.”

A resident of Aptos (where he lives with his wife, Katie, and their three sons), John says the local setting provides ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. “My family and I are avid outdoors people. Whether going to the beach at Rio Del Mar or hiking at Nisene Marks, we love enjoying the beautiful weather and scenery.” John also pursues his interest in sports, whether personally participating; coaching his sons’ teams; or being a spectator at professional football, baseball and basketball games. Additionally, he enjoys performing automotive work. “On any given day, you might see me tinkering with a motorcycle or old sports car in my driveway.”

In his life and career, John espouses the importance of professional integrity. “I think you should never ask someone else to do something that you’re not willing to do yourself,” he says. “When it comes to my business, I’m willing to do anything that I ask of the people I work with, which fosters credibility and mutual respect between us.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, John says he’d go back to work. “I’ve tried the vacation thing, and it’s not really for me,” he laughs. “If I retired, I would need to stay busy, which is why I’d probably volunteer more with coaching youth sports or go into some area of teaching.”
