Joe Calvey: Doing Right
“I think honesty and communication are the two biggest things.”

MOUNTAIN VIEW – After six years in the HVAC industry, Joe Calvey decided to start his own company—a choice largely inspired by a desire to do right by customers. “I started out working in the HVAC union, where my uncle was a foreman,” he recounts. “After about four years, I gravitated toward working with residential contractors, which gave me a chance to interact with homeowners. That was a welcome change of pace from the commercial bent of union work. I enjoyed it, but I saw some contractors doing things I didn’t agree with, like cutting corners and taking advantage of customers. This motivated me to start my own company. I knew if I did things with honesty and had a good work ethic, I would definitely succeed.”

Today, as owner of Calvey Heating & Air, Joe says one of his favorite parts of his job is taking on new challenges. “I like the fact that there are always new things to learn in this industry. I also enjoy working with my employees and seeing them work their way up to becoming skilled technicians.”

A resident of Los Gatos (where he lives with his wife, Christina, and their three children), Joe expresses his appreciation for life and work in the Bay Area. “The weather is great here and there’s plenty of demand for our services. When I first started my business, the economy was terrible due to the 2008 crash, but things have improved a lot since then and we’ve been able to stay busy.”

Outside of work, Joe engages in active pastimes like sports and traveling. “I’m a big sports guy,” he affirms. “I like to play soccer, as well as attend professional sporting events or watch them on TV. I also like traveling with my family and checking out new parts of the world. We’ve been everywhere from Europe to Mexico to Hawaii.”

In regard to his professional career, Joe says good customer service comes down to two main components. “I think honesty and communication are the two biggest things. I’ve found that if you’re upfront with customers and communicate with them at every step of the process, it makes a huge difference. Even when there are problems or setbacks, people really appreciate being kept in the loop.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Joe says he’d give back. “If I retired and had money, I would want to take care of the people who got me to where I am, like my parents and those who helped me progress in my profession. Besides that, I would definitely do some more traveling.”
