SAN JOSE – For Jeffrey Pratt, making the transition to a career in real estate was the start of not only a new professional direction, but a personal one as well. “I had been working in the high-tech industry for several years and found it didn’t really give me any satisfaction,” he explains. “I just felt I didn’t have the opportunity to reach my full potential.” After talking with a friend who was in the real estate business, Jeffrey found himself intrigued by the comparatively dynamic, hands-on qualities that characterized the industry. “Working one-on-one with people and helping them achieve their goals sounded much more rewarding than what I had been doing, so I decided to make the change.” He got right to work, earning his real estate license and getting familiarized with the industry before launching Jeffrey Pratt – Sereno Group in 2002. Eleven years later, Jeffrey is still enjoying the rewards that come with his livelihood.
Originally from the small town of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, Jeffrey fell in love with the West Coast while on a trip to visit some friends. “I was about 19 when I first came to California, and I basically decided that I wasn’t leaving,” he laughs. One of the things Jeffrey enjoys most about the Bay Area is its ethnic and cultural diversity. “Working in real estate, I quickly recognized that this area attracts people from all over the world. The variety of people I get to meet is just amazing, and it’s one of the most enjoyable things about living and working in the Bay Area.”
When he’s not showing houses or meeting with clients, Jeffrey likes to stay active by playing golf, riding his bike and working in his garden. “I find gardening very rewarding,” he says. “It’s actually a lot like my job—you basically start from nothing and reap the rewards of your efforts. I grow all kinds of flowers and vegetables, including heirloom tomatoes, which I like to give to my clients, friends, and coworkers.” Jeffrey also enjoys supporting his local minor league baseball team, the San Jose Giants. “The stadium is literally five minutes from my house, so I like to go there and watch games in the evenings.”
A quote that Jeffrey says has influenced his approach to both life and work comes from renowned poet Maya Angelou. “When people show themselves to you, believe them,” he recites. “That’s very important in my line of work, especially when it comes to helping clients make the right decisions. For instance, some clients seem to constantly look for reasons not to buy a house, and I think to myself, ‘They’re showing themselves to me and I have to believe that.’ In many cases, I find they’re just going through the motions, when maybe it just isn’t the right thing for them at that time.”
