Jeffrey Pickard: A Five-Star Development
“In this line of work, you get to see homes undergo major transformations within a very short period of time...and it’s very satisfying to be part of that process.”

CAMPBELL − Jeffrey Pickard didn’t get to be second-generation owner of his family’s business by mere default; rather, he started from the bottom and worked his way up just like anyone else. “I was helping my dad set up at home shows when I was 12, I started working in the field when I was 15 and I passed the contractor’s license board exam when I was 19,” he recounts. “My responsibilities at the company sort of evolved from there. I ran the service department for a few years and eventually ended up in sales, which was really the best fit for me. Later, when my mom retired, I took over ownership of the company.”

Today, as owner of Five Star Windows, Jeffrey says he loves witnessing the “before and after” that takes place during each project. “In this line of work, you get to see homes undergo major transformations within a very short period of time. By the end, the house is more beautiful, comfortable and secure, and it’s very satisfying to be part of that process.”

As a resident of San Jose (where he lives with his wife, Alexis, and their daughter, Charlotte), Jeffrey says he enjoys being an active part of the local community. “I love the proximity of where I live to where I work. It’s nice to bump into past clients at the grocery store or farmer’s market and receive a warm greeting.”

Outside of work, Jeffrey spends the bulk of his free time with his wife and daughter. “I work so much that when I’m off, I don’t want to do anything other than hang out with my girls,” he says. “In addition to going on walks to the local park or visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium, we enjoy spending weekends at my father-in-law’s house in Discovery Bay, where we just hang out on the dock and relax.”

In regard to his professional career, Jeffrey says he’s adopted a phrase coined by his mother. “My mom came up with what would become our business mantra: ‘We never promise more than we can deliver, but we always strive to deliver more than what we promise.’ Some contractors will tell a customer anything in order to get the job, which inevitably leads to disappointment with the final product. We really wanted to change the conversation by giving our customers realistic expectations while simultaneously setting a high bar for ourselves in terms of customer satisfaction.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Jeffrey says he would take his longtime hobby of cooking to the next level. “I would go to culinary school and become a sommelier. I wouldn’t want to work in a restaurant or anything—I just want to cook for myself and my family.” Jeffrey says he’d also seek out opportunities to volunteer his time. “I was part of Leadership San Jose a few years ago and was exposed to a lot of fantastic nonprofits throughout the South Bay, so if I had more time, I’d love to be more involved in things like that.”
