Ivan Gomez: Fencing Progression
“When you own a business, you’re a lot more self-motivated than when you’re working for someone else..."

CASTRO VALLEY – When Ivan Gomez started working for a fence builder during college, it marked the beginning of a progressive professional journey. “My dad was in general construction and used to take me with him to jobsites, so I learned to work with my hands early on,” he remembers. “I went to college after high school, but in order to make ends meet, I got a job with a small wood fencing company. Over time, I worked my way up from being a laborer to being a foreman, and from there I jumped into the commercial side, where I learned how to do chain-link fencing, ornamental iron and custom work. After that, I was an estimator for a while, until finally, after I’d learned just about everything there was to know about fencing, I got my license and started my own company.”

Today, as president of Fine Line Fence, Inc., Ivan says his favorite part of his job is the sense of satisfaction it gives him. “When you own a business, you’re a lot more self-motivated than when you’re working for someone else, so that has been a great transition. It’s very satisfying to offer a service that customers are happy about after the job is completed, so that’s what really drives me these days.”

Originally from Ensenada, Mexico, Ivan now resides in Castro Valley. Outside of work, he spends his time engaged in a variety of active pastimes. “On the weekends, I enjoy spending time with my son, Jovanny,” he says. “We do a lot of weekend trips to places like Lake Tahoe to go fishing and hiking.” Additionally, Ivan likes to push the limits with extreme sports. “I’m one of those adrenaline junkies. I like skydiving, bungee jumping…you name it.”

In regard to his professional career, Ivan says it’s crucial to give customers realistic expectations. “That’s something I learned early as a business owner. When you first start, you’re eager to take every job that comes your way, but if you aren’t careful, you can get in over your head. Through these kinds of experiences, I learned the importance of being upfront with customers at the outset and setting realistic expectations for things like cost and timeline.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Ivan says he’d return to his hometown. “I love this country and the opportunities it provides, but the fast-paced lifestyle in California can be pretty exhausting. If I were to retire, I’d move back to Ensenada, where I could enjoy more of a slow-paced life with friends and family.”
