Dr. Michael Temkin: A Lean Livelihood
“There’s no greater reward than seeing a patient lose weight, become more active and basically get their life back.”

SAN RAMON – When asked what led him to become a physician, Dr. Michael Temkin says it stemmed from a family influence. “Growing up, most of my extended family members were physicians, including my uncle, who was my mentor,” he remembers. “One thing that struck me about being a physician was you had to have a breadth of knowledge and get to know your patients on a deep level. I saw how my relatives were respected in their communities and how their patients appreciated them, and it really inspired me to follow that path.”

After completing medical school, Dr. Temkin took the uncommon route of becoming a solo practitioner. “I decided early on that I didn’t want to join a medical group or work for a big corporation; rather, I wanted to run my own practice,” he explains. “So, in April of 2000, I literally hung a shingle and opened my doors. I started with zero patients and slowly built my practice over the next 16 years. Now, I have thousands of patients.”

Today, Dr. Temkin says his favorite part of his job is restoring his patients’ health through weight loss. “So many health problems are weight-related, from high blood pressure and cholesterol to sleep apnea and diabetes. By helping my patients lose weight, I’m often able to help them reverse these kinds of issues and get off of medication. There’s no greater reward than seeing a patient lose weight, become more active and basically get their life back.”

A resident of Alamo (where he lives with his wife, Heidi, and their three children), Michael expresses his fondness for the Bay Area setting. “I was born and raised here, and I still love it. My family and I enjoy doing outdoor activities, so it’s the perfect place for us. We love spending time at the coast, hiking in the mountains, going snow skiing in winter, and waterskiing and wakeboarding in summer.”

In regard to his professional career, Dr. Temkin believes in treating patients the way he’d want to be treated. “Relationships are key in health care,” he affirms. “When your patients feel they can trust you, that’s an important building block, both for achieving their treatment goals and maintaining a successful practice.”
