Dr. Isaac Lin: A Positive Impact
“I like the fact that I get to make a positive impact with my work."

SAN JOSE − Years ago, Isaac Lin was working toward a career in the medical profession when a chance venture into an adjacent field led to a permanent change in direction. “Late in college, I started interning at a clinic that provided both medical and dental services,” he remembers. “About halfway through the internship, the clinic needed someone to fill in on the dental side, so I offered to help. After doing it for a while, I found I really enjoyed it and eventually decided to switch my focus from medicine to dentistry.”

Today, more than two decades since he began practicing dentistry, Dr. Lin says he enjoys multiple aspects of his career. “I like the fact that I get to make a positive impact with my work. I also enjoy interacting with my patients, many of whom have become good friends of mine.”

As a resident of San Jose (where he lives with his wife, Melody, and their daughters, Arianne and Keira), Dr. Lin expresses his appreciation for life in the Silicon Valley. “I moved around a lot when I was growing up, so ever since I settled in San Jose, I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to become part of a community,” he says. “Plus, it’s neat being situated in the midst of a major high-tech hub. Some of my patients are part of the high-tech community, so I get to see some pretty neat things, like prototypes that haven’t yet been released to the public.”

Outside of work, Dr. Lin engages in a variety of pastimes, from outdoor activities to sports. “I enjoy hiking and mountain biking in the Santa Cruz Mountains,” he says. “Often, the girls and I will cut out for the day and go to spots like Big Basin or Mt. Madonna.” In addition to playing golf and racquetball, Dr. Lin enjoys following professional sports. “I follow football, baseball, basketball and hockey, as well as motorsports like rally driving and F-1.”

In his professional career, Dr. Lin espouses the importance of taking time to ensure patient satisfaction. “One of the reasons my practice has been successful is because I don’t rush things,” he explains. “I book plenty of time with my patients, which gives them an opportunity to have all their questions answered and learn about their options. That way, they’re able to make decisions with more confidence, which leads to greater overall satisfaction.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Dr. Lin says he’d immerse himself in a new culture. “I know a couple that, rather than just go on vacation for a couple of weeks, will find a furnished apartment in the area they want to visit and just move there for a couple of months. That way, they’re not rushing to see and do everything, which allows them to really absorb the local culture. That always seemed like a neat way to travel, so I’d like to give it a try.”

Ask me anything!
Q: What’s your favorite sports team?

A: Sadly, the Chicago Cubs. I spent a good part of my childhood in Illinois, so I follow all the Chicago teams, although I like the Bay Area teams as well. I’m actually raising my kids as Giants fans because I don’t want them to suffer like me!

Q: What’s your favorite season?

A: Fall, because of the beautiful colors and nice weather.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?

A: My wife and I like trying new places, so our favorite restaurant is always changing, but one of our recent favorites is Tapsilog Bistro in Campbell.

Q: Reality TV or documentaries?

A: Documentaries. Right now, we’re really into “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey” with Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Q: What’s one website you visit on a daily basis?

A: GolfChannel.com—I’m addicted to golf and have to keep up with the standings.
