Dr. George Koerber: An Unexpected Inspiration
"I enjoy the opportunity to improve my patients’ self-assurance by restoring their smiles.”

CONCORD − When George Koerber found himself stationed at a military hospital during his tenure in the United States Army, he never expected it would lead to a career in dentistry. “While serving in the Vietnam War, I was stationed for a time at Walter Reed Medical Center in Maryland, where they did a lot of dental work in addition to medical rehabilitation,” he remembers. “I got to know a couple of the dentists there and was impressed by their work, which got me interested in the field. At that point, I wasn’t even a college graduate, so after I was discharged, I returned to school to study dentistry. In 1975, I graduated from dental school and started practicing.”

Today, as owner of The Dental Center at Sears, Dr. Koerber says his favorite part of his job is making a positive impact on his patients’ dental—as well as mental—health. “You’d be surprised how much the condition of a person’s teeth can affect their confidence. I enjoy the opportunity to improve my patients’ self-assurance by restoring their smiles.”

A longtime resident of the Bay Area, Dr. Koerber says the local setting is perfect for pursuing his two favorite hobbies: fishing and gardening. “I have a greenhouse where I grow tomatoes and other vegetables, and with the great weather we have, I’m able to get a lot of good produce. I also like to go salmon and fly fishing. Besides fishing locally in the Sierras or the Delta, I go to Idaho every year and fish the Clearwater River, which is a great spot for steelhead trout.”

In regard to his professional career, Dr. Koerber says he aspires toward a trifecta of excellence. “The three main qualities we embrace are honesty, friendliness and professionalism. Some dental practices are more focused on gadgetry and upselling patients than they are on providing excellent service, so I take a lot of pride in running an upstanding practice. When I read our reviews, I can tell it’s paying off, because those are the three things our patients mention over and over.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Dr. Koerber says he’d do some traveling. “I’d probably spend a couple of weeks in the Mediterranean and Tahiti before heading to New Zealand for some trout fishing. Another thing on my bucket list is to go fishing in Patagonia. In the U.S., steelhead trout average about 15 pounds, but in Patagonia they’re triple that size!”
