“I think there’s a real need in our industry for someone who educates, so that’s kind of been my goal."

SAN JOSE − Even though Donnie Gupton didn’t plan on getting involved with his family’s business, he later came to recognize it as an ideal opportunity. “My dad started this business when I was a kid, so I’ve been around it my whole life, but it wasn’t until after college that I formally started working for the company,” he explains. “During college, I realized I had a passion for business and marketing, so after I graduated with my degree in Communications, my dad and I decided to become business partners.”

Today, as vice president of Precision Flooring, Donnie says his favorite part of his job is employing his knowledge of communications to educate consumers about the flooring industry. “I think there’s a real need in our industry for someone who educates, so that’s kind of been my goal, whether I’m doing educational YouTube videos or simply speaking with customers. There’s a lot of misinformation out there when it comes to what’s good and what’s not, so it’s up to companies like us to set the record straight and help consumers make good choices.”

A lifelong resident of San Jose (where he lives with his son, Drake, and daughter, McKenley), Donnie expresses an appreciation for the vibrant, innovative character of his hometown. “Being on the cutting edge of the tech world, I think there’s a lot of opportunity here for businesses to thrive. For our company in particular, we’re in a constantly growing market, with lots of new homes and a strong economy, so it’s just a great place to be in business.”

Outside of work, Donnie enjoys a variety of activities, both personally and with his family. “I like working out, going to sporting events and concerts, and doing water and snow sports,” he says. “I also enjoy being part of my kids’ academics and athletics. Currently, my son is playing flag football and my daughter is dancing, so I look forward to seeing them broaden and develop their abilities as they get older.”

In his life and career, Donnie espouses the virtue of being a true craftsman. “Something my dad really drives at is the importance of craftsmanship,” he says. “One of our core philosophies is that a craftsman is only judged by what he’s willing to accept as his final product. In other words, make sure whatever you’re submitting is something you’re proud of.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Donnie says he’d redirect his efforts toward performing volunteer work. “I like being creative and innovative, so if I were to retire from my current job, I’d probably find something new to expend my creative energy on. I’d definitely like to get more involved in giving back to my community, whether by coaching little league football or helping out in other ways.”
