David Hazel: Double Impact
“Basically, my goal is to make a new friend on every service call.”

ANTIOCH – A decade after retiring from the police force, David Hazel has continued to make a positive impact on his community, most notably through a career in the HVAC field. “I was a police officer in the Bay Area for 11 years,” he says. “After retiring in 2007, I wanted to get into a new vocation where I could help people, and the residential service industry seemed like a great fit. I started as an installation manager with a local HVAC company and eventually moved upward in management positions. When I met Jason Devries, we found that we shared the same vision and desire to provide the best customer experience possible. Working together, we made our vision a reality by building our own HVAC service company.”

Today, as managing partner at smart72 Inc., David says his two favorite things about his job are working with customers and watching his employees grow in their careers. “Having the chance to get to know our clients and learn from them is second to none. I also really enjoy working with our team members. Being able to provide great lives for them and their families is something that motivates me every day.”

A resident of East Contra Costa County, David expresses his appreciation for life and work in the Bay Area. “The Bay Area is one of the best places to live in the world. In particular, I think the diversity of people living and working together makes this a special place to live and raise a family.”

Outside of work, David likes to extend his positive impact by coaching youth sports like football and baseball. He also enjoys spending time with his wife, Melinda, and their two children. “One our favorite spots to go as a family is Lake Tahoe,” he says. “We relax on the beach, go on hikes and just enjoy the natural beauty around us.”

In regard to his professional career, David espouses the value of great customer service. “I think you should treat your customers the same way you’d treat your friends and family,” he affirms. “I like to repay my positive experiences with our customers by providing them with effective, affordable HVAC solutions. Basically, my goal is to make a new friend on every service call.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, David says he’d devote more time to coaching. “I would get more actively involved in youth sports, as well as the Special Olympics. I’m not the kind of person who can just sit around and relax—I like to stay busy and be impactful in one way or another.”
