SAN RAFAEL – As a second-generation business owner, Cal Farnsworth Jr. now runs the company his father founded more than 40 years ago. However, his entrance into the moving industry was no silver spoon affair—rather, he earned his stripes by working his way up from the bottom. “I went through the school of hard knocks just like anyone else,” he affirms. “I started out delivering packing boxes, washing trucks, and assisting with loading after school and on weekends. Later, I advanced to being a driver, following which I went into sales, and from there, operations. By the time my father retired, I had gained a familiarity with every aspect of the business.”
Today, as owner of Earl Farnsworth Express, Cal enjoys the versatility offered by his line of work. “In this business, no two jobs are alike,” he explains. “From moving delicate or unusual items to completing a move within a limited window of time, there’s a new challenge every day, and that keeps it fun and interesting.”
An ardent outdoorsman, Cal appreciates the wealth of opportunities afforded by the sumptuous Bay Area landscape. “Between the mountains and the coast, this region has a lot to offer,” he says. “I’m passionate about a lot of outdoor activities, including fly fishing, archery and hunting. I also enjoy water skiing, horseback riding and mountain biking. Basically, if there’s something fun to do, I’m in!” When he’s not amidst the great outdoors, Cal spends time with wife, Carole, and keeps up with their two grown children, Taylor and Shelly.
When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Cal says he’d likely explore an exotic location. “I haven’t had the opportunity to do a lot of traveling, so I’d probably take a trip to somewhere I’ve never been, like New Zealand.”
