Brian Ramirez: Wired for Success
“Even if I won the lottery...I don’t think I’d retire.

PLEASANTON − Not long after joining the workforce, a young Brian Ramirez was given the chance to learn a specialized trade—an opportunity he not only accepted, but also transformed into a lucrative livelihood. “When I was 20 years old, I was running heavy equipment in the labor union,” he remembers. “I met an electrician who was in need of an apprentice, so I thought I’d give it a shot. Pretty soon, I was wiring these really big custom homes, and by the age of 27, I had my license and started my own company.” When asked what attracted him to the electrical trade, Brian cites a number of factors. “I really liked the idea of being able to fix things other people couldn’t, as well as doing lighting design and safely hooking up machinery and equipment to make sure nobody got hurt.”

Today, as owner of BR Electric, Brian says he enjoys having the freedom to give his customers the best possible service. “Unfortunately, some companies are more concerned with getting the job done quickly than taking care of the customer, but I think it’s more profitable in the long term to take the opposite approach. Owning my own business allows me to spend the time that’s necessary to do things right and make sure my clients are satisfied with my service.”

A resident of San Ramon (where he lives with his wife, Krista, and their four children), Brian expresses his appreciation for the sheer diversity to be found in the Bay Area. “I like how the Bay Area consists of several regions that are very close together, yet extremely different,” he says. “Whether you’re in the Silicon Valley, San Francisco or the Napa Valley, it feels like you’re in a totally different part of the country.”

Outside of work, Brian pursues a second career as a full-time family man. “Some of my hobbies include riding Motocross and going wakeboarding, but these days most of my free time is devoted to my kids,” he says. “Whether we’re playing soccer, going to the movies or going out for ice cream, hanging out with my kids is what brings me the most happiness.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Brian says he’d keep right on working. “Even if I won the lottery and never had to work another day in my life, I don’t think I’d retire. I’d probably give the company to my son and then work for him, or maybe just be an advisor. I’ve put a lot of effort into building this business, and I still have a lot more I want to accomplish, so I wouldn’t want to just walk away from it.”
