Bill Van Mastrigt: A Simple Profession
“I enjoy getting to know my customers on a more personal level over time."

SAN RAMON – Dissatisfied with working for a large corporation, Bill Van Mastrigt followed his desire for a simpler profession to a career in the plumbing industry. “After my service in the military, I went to work for the Shell oil refinery in Martinez,” he recounts. “After about six years, I decided I didn’t like the big corporate environment and wanted to do something on a smaller scale. I knew the owner of a plumbing company in Concord, and he agreed to hire me and train me in the business. Eventually, I decided to continue in the industry with the goal of starting my own company.”

Today, as owner of Advanced Plumbing and Rooter Service, Bill says his favorite part of his job is forming long-term relationships with his customers. “I enjoy getting to know my customers on a more personal level over time. I find it very rewarding to be closely connected to my community—plus, you’d be amazed at how many bags of Christmas cookies I bring home during the holidays!”

A resident of San Ramon (where he lives with his wife, Nilda, and their children), Bill prefers to spend the bulk of his free time outside. “We’re very outdoorsy people,” he affirms. “In the winter we’re skiing and snowboarding, and in the summer we do a lot of hiking, camping, and hunting. You name it—if it’s outdoors, we like doing it.”

In regard to his professional career, Bill says he hopes to build a legacy. “My long-term goal with the business is to create something that’s both a sustainable source of income and that will provide professional opportunities for my kids as they grow older. I already have one son in the industry and, just like me, it has opened up a lot of opportunities for him. Of course, keeping the business growing and successful means maintaining the core values I started with: being honest, doing the job right and taking care of the customer.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Bill says he’d expand the scope of his wilderness experience. “As an outdoor enthusiast, I’d like to travel around and see some new places. I’d also probably schedule some out-of-state hunting trips. I’ve always wanted to go moose hunting in Alaska.”
