Anton Kalafati: Building Opportunity
“I think it’s true that you get out of life what you put into it.”

OAKLAND − Anton Kalafati didn’t plan on following in his father’s professional footsteps, but when he was given a chance to take over the family business, he knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “My dad was a general contractor in San Francisco, and while I was in college, he decided to retire from contracting and take a job with the Oakland Housing Authority,” he explains. “I’ve always been pretty handy and used to work on lots of projects with him, so taking over his business seemed like something I could do. I started working with him part-time to start, and things ended up working out really well. Ten years later, I’m still doing it!”

Today, as president of B Side Inc., Anton says his favorite part of his job is the chance for creative expression. “I really like it when a client asks for my input on a project design and I’m able to come up with ideas they hadn’t thought of. Plus, it’s just fun building something from scratch and watching it progress from an idea to a finished product.”

Originally from Ukraine, Anton came to the United States at the age of nine and has resided in San Francisco ever since. When asked his favorite part of living and working in the City by the Bay, he cites the many opportunities to work on interesting, big-budget projects. “With the San Francisco economy booming, people are coming here from all over the world to buy and remodel homes, so there’s a lot of money being put into design and materials, which makes my job even more fun.”

When he’s not working, Anton engages in pastimes such as automotive work and physical fitness. “I like working on cars, and I’m currently fixing up a ’76 Corvette that hasn’t run in years,” he says. “I also like to stay physically fit—I do jiu-jitsu and work out at the gym several times a week.”

In his life and career, Anton espouses the importance of applying effort toward specific goals. “I think it’s true that you get out of life what you put into it,” he says. “The simple truth is, if you don’t work hard, you won’t get to where you want to be. I also think it’s good to shoot as high as you can with your goals—that way, even if you don’t achieve them entirely, you’ll at least get to a pretty good place. In contrast, if you shoot low, you won’t get anywhere.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Anton says he’d redirect his efforts toward his automotive hobby. “If I had the time and money, I’d design and build my own custom car and see if anybody likes it. If so, I’d make a couple more; if not, I’d just have a one-off car and enjoy it myself.”
