Alex Lee: Man on the Move
“One of the things I really like about carpet cleaning is that it keeps you moving."

HERCULES – Alex Lee describes himself as someone who likes to constantly be on the move, which might explain why, in the midst of being a full-time firefighter and family man, he decided to start a carpet cleaning business. “As a firefighter for the San Jose Fire Department, I work block shifts of 56 hours in a row, which leaves me with a lot of spare time in between,” he explains. “To best utilize that extra time, I decided to start a business on the side. I wanted something that would be flexible enough to accommodate my firefighter schedule, didn’t require a lot of training and equipment to get started, and was a “need” business—one with a demand that didn’t depend on economic factors. As I looked at various franchises, I came across Oxi Fresh and saw that it perfectly matched all my criteria. Plus, I really liked their business model and cleaning method. It wasn’t long before I started my own franchise here in the East Bay.”

Today, as owner of Oxi Fresh of Berkeley, Alex says he enjoys the fast-paced character of his second livelihood. “One of the things I really like about carpet cleaning is that it keeps you moving—you clean the carpets, get paid and you’re out of there. As a guy who likes being on the move, it suits me perfectly.”

A resident of Hercules (where he lives with his wife, Laura, and their three children), Alex expresses his appreciation for his East Bay locale. “The East Bay is awesome. There’s a lot of diversity, good schools for our kids and plenty of demand for my business. Plus, I grew up here, so I have a lot of family in the area.”

Outside of work, Alex unsurprisingly likes to stay active, bringing his family along on road trips and nature hikes. “I love to go RVing and camping with my wife and kids,” he affirms. “We went to Yellowstone earlier this year, which was a great time. I’m also an avid fisherman, and I enjoy taking my boat out on the delta to catch some striper.” On occasion, Alex also likes revisiting his former avocation as a professional salsa dancer. “I danced professionally for about 10 years, during which time I performed and competed all over the world. I really enjoyed it, but it was a substantial time commitment, so once we started having kids, I decided to retire from competition.”

As both a firefighter and a carpet cleaner, Alex says he’s found at least one key similarity between his two livelihoods. “While my two jobs are a lot different, at their core, they’re both about helping people. Whether I’m putting out a fire or cleaning a carpet, I’m doing something good for someone else. I guess one thing I like about carpet cleaning is it’s never a life or death situation.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Alex says he’d get right back on the move. “I would load up the RV with my family and go somewhere fun. I’d also like to do some more fishing, and who knows, I may pick up another interest or two.”
